Physiotherapy is a regulated profession in Canada. Which means you have to obtain license to practice as a physiotherapist. The license to practice is issued by regulatory bodies/colleges in every province or territory. Beside the successful completion of the PCE exams different regulatory bodies have specific requirements for the licensing/registration. Candidates are responsible for deciding which province/territory you want to work so you can find more details on regulatory body requirements.
Immigration
Internationally trained Physiotherapist (IEPTs) who received their education outside Canada can choose from various routes that are present in the current market Federal skills worker class, Provincial Express entry stream etc. Like other industries, healthcare is facing workforce shortages throughout Canada and this trend is expected to continue for coming years. Where to find more information on immigration?
Express Entry: It is not an immigration program. It is an online system that is used to manage immigration applications from skilled workers. There are 3 immigration programs managed through Express Entry:
- Federal Skills worker Class
- Federal skills Trade Program
- Canadian Experience Class

If you are eligible for one of the above three immigration programs, you can also apply through Express Entry for the Provincial Nominee Program. How to become Physiotherapist in Canada
The process of attaining independent practice for IEPTs is broken down below into 4 steps.
Steps 1:
The first step towards your goal of working and living in Canada as Physiotherapist is credential evaluation through Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators (CARP). More details can be found over the link and you can also view the webinar for more information. Also, there is another requirement of completing the language assessment for English or French.
Steps 2:
After successful completion of the credential evaluation you can appear for PCE written exam that is conducted by CARP.
Steps 3:
After passing the PCE written exam you become eligible to apply for the provisional license to work under supervision as a physiotherapist. The requirements for attaining the provisional license varies between the regulatory bodies. Depending on your choice you can find more information on their respective websites.
Steps 4:
Take the PCE clinical exam or Clinical competency evaluation depending on the province requirements. You must successfully complete the clinical exam/evaluation to get registered as independent practice or receive full license.
